Art in the Park

Come and join us for a fun time at “Art in the Park”.  The first annual “Art in the Park” is being featured at The Friendly Market on June 13th from 10-3.  The Friendly Market is located at the corner of Bridges St. Ext. and Friendly Rd. in Morehead City.  

This will be a large gathering of local and regional artists demonstrating and selling their works.  They will work in various mediums including watercolor, pastel, colored pencils, acrylics, mixed media, collage, photography and pine needle basket making.  There will also be artists working with glass and in oils.   Artists from Carven, Carteret, Pamlico, Pitt and Onslow counties will be represented.  The artists will be working throughout the pine tree studded paths of the market.  

Visitors will have the opportunity to stop, watch and talk to these artists and learn from them in a very casual and friendly atmosphere.  It should be a day of fun for all.  Many of these artists are local, state and national award winners.  

Not only will you have a chance to enjoy “Art in the Park” but will have the bonus of enjoying The Friendly Market experience.  This is an upscale open-air market featuring fine art and upscale crafts along with fresh baked goods, fresh local produce and seafood as well as a very large nursery.

Vernon James Research Ctr. in Plymouth will be hosting the Northeastern North Carolina Craft Workshop. Evie Henderson will be teaching the Calligraphy Workshop there May 12 & 13th.  more information of all events posted at the NC Cooperative Extension Site

Jonathan Bowling's metal horse sculpture, "west," is selected as one of ten finalists of a national juried outdoor sculpture exhibition.
 
Greenville, NC – Apr 27, 2009 – IBX Lifestyles is pleased to announce that Inner Banks sculptor Jonathan Bowling’s “west” has been selected for a national juried outdoor sculpture exhibition, The 2009 Cary Visual Art Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition.
"west," a 14h-hand filly, was constructed out of steel, including recycled steel from horse-drawn wagons, saw blades, automobile parts and farm equipment.
Mr. Bowling, who resides in the North Carolina Inner Banks town of Greenville, is “honored by this recognition” of his work.
The exhibition's juror was Linda Johnson Dougherty, Chief Curator & Curator of Contemporary Art at the North Carolina Museum of Art.  Prior to joining the staff at the North Carolina Museum of Art, she was a curator at The Phillips Collection, a research associate at the National Gallery of Art, and a research assistant at the National Museum of American Art in Washington, DC.

This outdoor juried show features the work of artists, photographers and craftsmen from all over the country. Demonstrations throughout the weekend. 12th Annual Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show May 4-27, 2009 Features an eclectic mix of local art on display at the Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park. Held in memory of Mollie Fearing, one of the founders of the root organization from which DCAC arose. In 1975 a group of Dare county residents met at the home of Mollie Fearing where they set about founding an organization that would introduce thousands of school children and adults to music, dance, theatre, painting, sculpture, poetry and literature.  The organization would initially be called the Sea and Sounds Arts Council and later, the Dare County Arts Council. Mollie Fearing was elected president of the Arts Council in 1975 and was a vital supporter and advocate of the arts until the time of her death on September 3, 1997. Mollie’s contributions to the community were numerous, from serving as mayor for the Town of Manteo, to serving on the board of the Roanoke Island Historical Association, to her dedication to the arts. Mollie’s legacy in our community remains strong to this day. Open to members and residents. Cash awards. Pocosin Arts Folk School offers Nature Drawing Classes taught by Hilary Anderson in partnership with Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.  Students will explore the great diversity of plants and wildlife visible from the boardwalk along the Scuppernong River.  Students will learn about native plants and animals and develop skills in observation and drawing in charcoal, colored pencil, and pastel, and and/or watercolor.  The class will meet at 3:30 pm and end at 5:00 pm outside the Walter B. Jones Sr. Center for the Sounds on Wednesdays.  The first session includes May 13th, 20th, 27th, and June 3rd.   Tuition for one session (four classes) is $30 and includes materials.  The class is open to students age 6 and up.  Call or stop in the gallery by Tuesday, May 12th to register for the first session. 252-796-2787
