Columbia Art Space (CAS) is a new art gallery opening in Columbia, NC. CAS is owned and operated by three young artists and will open for business on Memorial Day weekend, starting things off with a grand opening on May 27th, 5-9.

Painting with Knives I, II, III:
Cold wax and oil paint

April 30 & May 1, 2011
9:00am - 4:00pm Saturday & Sunday

Working from direct observation and photographs we will make paintings using oil paints and cold wax medium (a solvent-softened mixture of bees wax and other synthetic waxes.) This thick paste is applied to a wood panel (or canvas) using a selection of palette knives. Through demos and one-on-one instruction we will explore the possibilities of layering and incising to capture and transform our subject matter. This is and introductory class for some and a refresher and continuation for others. We will discuss composition, color, and working individually will encourage participants to take the next step in their painting.

River Walk Gallery and Arts Center will host a writing workshop, Love Begets….? led by poet Nancy Mitchell, in which participants will contemplate art works in the exhibit Love, which will be on view in the gallery, and compose poetry or prose written from pieces from this exhibit. The writing will be critiqued and revised and read in a public reading later that evening in River Walk Gallery and Arts Center, and be displayed as part of the exhibit.

Mitchell is the author of two volumes of poetry, The Near Surround (Four Way Books, 2002) and Grief Hut, (Cervena Barva Press, 2009.) She teaches in the English Department at Salisbury University, Maryland, and lives on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, with her husband John Ebert, a filmmaker.

The workshop will begin at 1:00PM and end at 3:00PM, and the reading will begin at 7:00 p.m. in River Walk Gallery and Arts Center, 139 W. Main, Washington. Participants for the workshop are limited to eight, and the cost of workshop is 25.00. The reading and reception are free and open to the public.

Riverwalk Gallery is hosting a reception on Friday 7/16 at the Turnage theater to celebrate the show of member's works on display for the month of July. This is a fundraiser for the Turnage theater. A percentage of all sales go to the theater. The reception is from 5-6:30pm on FRiday 7/16. The works can be seen through the month of July, Monday-Friday 10-4pm. The Island Art Gallery and Christmas Shop is featuring the work of artist Ron Vick during the month of July.

Vick draws inspiration from the coastal Carolinas' breathtaking sunsets, abundant wildlife, rural landscapes and ocean vistas. He works in a variety of media including metals, wood, paint, and photography.

A resident of Tyrrell County , His formal education began at Atlantic Christian College (Barton) in Wilson and culminated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from East Carolina University.

After graduation, he settled in Columbia and began his career as an artist painting views of the Scuppernong River as well as portraits of local citizens. The Atlantic Flyway provided magnificent waterfowl inspirations for paintings. Captivated by hunting lore, he began to create vintage styled decoys that drew clients nationally including Ducks Unlimited. His work was featured on the cover of the Green Wings catalog. During the course of promoting the decoys, he became an adept photographer adding this medium to his repertory.

Saturday, May 8th, 10:00 am-4:00 pm, come to the Pocosin Arts Studio for a creative day making potholders and puppets, which you may offer for sale and/or display during the summer exhibit: Pots, Pot Racks, Potholders, and Puppets! Bring some supplies such as felted wool, fabric remnants, quilt squares, needles & thread, embroidery floss, scissors, (& your sewing machine if you prefer). We will exchange ideas about how to make artful potholders using simple hand-stitching techniques. We’ll also collaborate on some ideas for making handmade original and inspired puppets with children. Get some ideas for Vacation Bible School craft projects! All participants will have the chance to create these inspired local arts and crafts to sell through the Pocosin Arts Gallery during the summer tourist season.
